What is encore?
encore is a new way for patrons to find materials in Jefferson County Public Library's collection, including selected subscription databases. Use encore when you need to do a broad keyword search to see what resources the Library has on a particular topic.
How do I use encore?
Using encore is simple. Type what you are looking for in the search box and click the orange arrow to the right. A list of related items will be displayed. If you do not see what you are looking for, use the "Refine by" options to narrow your search by format, subject, tags and more. The strength of using encore to search is when you are unsure of the exact title or author, or need to find multiple library resources in the same search. For example:
- To search for a topic such as "car repair" use encore.
- To search for the title "Bone" use the catalog. The catalog is a great resource if you are searching for a specific title or author.
Why encore and not Google?
You can find a lot of information through Google and other search engines - librarians use them every day. What you can't find in Google are library-specific resources, such as databases of full text articles that the Library subscribes to and items in the Library's catalog. To access this information you used to have to go to different places - the Library's online catalog, web site and databases - and do separate searches. Now you can search encore and get results back from these sources with just one click.
What advanced searches can I do in the encore search box?
The encore search is an "and" keyword search. This means you do not need to add the word "AND." Additionally, parentheses, "OR" and "NEAR" are not recognized as Boolean search operators - use the catalog Advanced Search instead.
- Use "quotation marks" to search for words together as one phrase
- Use * to truncate
