Assistive services for deaf and hard of hearing patrons

  • JCPL has an extensive collection of closed-captioned videos. Use the Library catalog subject headings "Video Recordings for the Hearing Impaired" or "DVDs for the Hearing Impaired" to locate a list of our current holdings. NOTE: The adult VHS format video collection has been phased out, but many of the same titles are available in DVD format. The Library also has videos for children in American Sign Language. Use the Library catalog subject heading "American Sign Language - Juvenile Films" for a complete listing.

  • An ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter is available for any Library program, including storytimes. Requests can be made through Erin Todd at 303-275-6167. Please request interpreter services at least two weeks in advance.

  • All patron education classes taught in the Computer Training Center at the Belmar Library can accommodate up to four students (with or without hearing aids) with personal FM listening devices. Please let staff know at the time of enrollment if you want to use one of these devices.

  • The Library has direct reference service available through its website, including, "Ask A Librarian," an e-mail reference service operated by Jefferson County Public Library, and "AskColorado," a link to reference departments all over the state.

  • The Standley Lake Library has a Comtek AT-72 for in-library use on request. This device allows the user to hear a speaker from across a noise-filled room. The system creates a wireless FM sound link between a transmitter worn by a speaker and a receiver worn by the person with impaired hearing, thus bypassing disturbing background noises and reverberation effects.

Assistive services for patrons with limited vision
  • Jefferson County Public Library has a wide selection of large-print materials, including recreational fiction and nonfiction, for our low vision patrons of all ages.

  • The Standley Lake Library has a Magni-Cam for in-Library use on request. This small, hand-held video camera magnifier projects enlarged black and white images onto a television screen, enabling low vision patrons to read library materials, personal mail and more.
