Free Books for 4-year-olds!

by:
Bethany

Are you the parent or caregiver of a four-year-old child in Jefferson County? If so, you can bring them to the Library to pick up a free book from April 7-21!

JCPL is once again participating in Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia's One Book 4 Colorado program, which aims to provide a new book to every four-year-old in the state. On top of giving away free books, we will also be hosting special celebrations at each of our libraries with storytimes and crafts. Jefferson County Commissioner Don Rosier will also be taking part in the festivities with special storytimes at the Lakewood Library on April 7.

Keep an eye out for the annoucement of the winning book for this year's One Book 4 Colorado

Books will be available in Spanish and English, accessible to children with special needs and provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

You have probably heard this before. I have, and yet it still blows my mind.

By age three your child's brain is 80% developed...90% by age five.

Interacting with your baby/toddler/preschooler daily has a huge impact on their early learning and language development. At our libraries we offer you a fun tool to make these times of learning and bonding even better.

Our free literacy calendars offer facts that motivate and activities that inspire. We have calendars for babies, toddlers and preschoolers that will guide you through the month. You will find out about materials and programs we have to support you during this stage in development.

For instance, did you know we have kits with picture books and CD's so your preschooler can "read" along? Did you know that all of our locations offer fun story times for babies and toddlers? (Actually, they are really fun for the caregiver as well!) You will also find buget friendly ideas for creative play like using a muffin tin and different sized balls to make an easy shape sorter for your baby. Or, try taking your preschooler on a "rhyming words" walk where you point out things around the house or neighborhood that rhyme, red/bed, dog/log?

Enjoy a few minutes of meaningful play every day with your beautiful baby...and grow that beautiful brain!

Art Stop on the Go @ Arvada

Oh to be a kid again! How fun would it be to create art based on some of your favorite books? Heck, that even sounds like a good time as an adult.

We've partnered with the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art to present an art-making workshop at the Arvada Library each month based on popular kids books! A visiting artist will help your kids express themselves through a variety of art media, with the emphasis on creativity and fun!

This free program is designed for 6-12-year-olds and takes place from 4-5 p.m., the fourth Friday of each month through July, at the Arvada Library. Registration is not required; participation is limited to the first 30 participants.

We certainly didn't have anything this cool around when I was a kid - I'm tempted to swing by just to see the masterpieces that are created!

Are you or do you know a kid 10 years or older who just loves to talk about books? Well then, you just gotta check out the Young Readers' Fun Club at the Lakewood Library! Much like adult books clubs, this group creates a list of books they would like to read and then assigns each book a month. On the third Tuesday of each month at 4p.m. the club meets to talk about the book of the month. But wait, the fun doesn't stop there! During club meetings kids also have fun making crafts and enjoying yummy snacks. There is no registration to attend. Just come on in and join the fun. All kids 10 years and older are welcome. Below are some of the upcoming books the club will be discussing.

December 17: Season of Gifts by Richard Peck

Relates the surprising gifts bestowed on twelve-year-old Bob Barnhart and his family, who have recently moved to a small Illinois town in 1958, by their larger-than-life neighbor, Mrs. Dowdel.

January 21: The Menagerie by Tui T. Sutherland

Hidden in the small town of Xanadu, Wyoming, there is a menagerie filled with mythical creatures like unicorns, dragons, and phoenixes. It's closely guarded. Tightly controlled. Top secret. And six griffin cubs have just escaped.

February 18: The Outcasts: Brotherband Chronicles by John Flanagan

Skandian outcasts Hal, Stig, and others do battle at sea against the Wolves and the Sharks, in the ultimate race across icy waters where not everyone thinks of the competition as play.

Today we shine our author spotlight on Sherry Jacobs! She is the author of many children’s books, including The Miracle of the People of the Sea, Ezra's Incredible Race, Bobby the Bully, Thane the Wanna Be Warrior, Tommy Tooley's Tears, and Ollie and the Firefly. She says she puts her heart and soul into each and every story, and that many contain messages for children.  She lives in Bailey, Colorado, with her husband of 46 years, her dog Murphy and various other mountain critters.

Meet Sherry at the Books and Bites event at the Arvada Library TOMORROW from 6 - 8:30 pm!
