About Our Departments
Jefferson County Public Library is organized into four main departments.
Public Services - Libraries
Jefferson County Public Library consists of seven full-service libraries ranging in size from 11,000 to 32,000 sq. ft.
Each full service library has a management team consisting of the library manager and the heads of reference, children's and circulation. The team is involved in all hiring decisions.
We also manage three smaller libraries under a Community/Link Libraries umbrella. One of these (Conifer) is a combined public school/public library. This department also operates a bookmobile and provides services to the homebound and nursing homes.
Each library participates actively in collection development. Our libraries "share" the $3.5 million collection; materials remain in the library where they are returned.
The library relies heavily on staff participation to facilitate decisions systemwide.
We emphasize staff training in technology, collection development, reference, customer service and management, as well as attendance at professional conferences.
The library's online presence is growing, with strategic focus on databases, which can be accessed off-site. We offer free education in Online Library and Internet use.
We participate in a resource-sharing agreement that includes academic and public libraries.
Public Services - Collections
Our Collections Division operates as an arm of Public Services and consists of Acquisitions, Cataloging and the Collection Development Office.
The Collection Development Office coordinates ordering of such items as bestsellers, award winners and travel books. Library staff serve as subject specialists, ordering materials and suggesting titles for purchase.
The collection is designed to support life-long, independent learners. Materials are purchased to target the reading level of a general audience and include popular materials, as well as a strong retrospective collection. Material is purchased in a variety of formats.
Administrative Services
Excellent library service requires excellent support. The Administrative Services Department enhances the library experience for staff and patrons by providing essential support services: delivering books to any library location a patron requests; providing well-maintained facilities and equipment; completing payroll, accounting and vendor transactions; training and developing staff; and harnessing the power of the Internet to extend library service into the home, school or workplace.
Information Technology
The Information Technology (IT) Department is responsible for library computer and network systems, suppling in-library access to the catalog and informational databases, as well as 24-hour Internet access.
IT works to maintain a cutting-edge electronic information environment. Working closely with all departments we monitor new technologies while applying a pragmatic approach to the effective management of our hardware, software and network systems.
Jefferson County Public Library has one of the largest and most well-trained technical staff of any library of comparable size and mission. We have a staff of 14 professionals who handle software applications, programming, networking, hardware replacement and repair, and administration.
Communications
The Communications Office designs and implements communications for the library's staff and community stakeholders. The office is responsible for stakeholder research, messaging and positioning, employee communications, media and community relations, outreach, advertising, marketing and promotions and more.
