Star trails will soon be lighting up library cards near you!

Congratulations to our Library Card Photography Contest winner, Zach Freund! His “Star Trails in the Mountains” photo received 328 votes on Facebook, narrowly beating out Charlie Casper’s “Black & White Red Rocks.”

Zach grew up in Conifer, Colorado and loves Jeffco. He is currently pursuing a degree in professional photography, and is an avid reader who says that books are very important to him. As for libraries, Zach says that he always looked forward to going to his local library and always participated in JCPL’s summer reading programs as a kid!

So what’s next?

Now that you have picked our next library card photo, we will put the finishing touches on the mock-up that was posted on our Facebook page before sending it to a library card vendor (hopefully, before March 1). You should start seeing the new library cards in April, just in time for our expanded hours to go into effect!

We want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who submitted a photo for this contest. This is the first time the Library has ever done contest on such a large scale and we were delighted by the number (and the quality) of photos you sent us. We also want to thank everyone who got on Facebook and shared your opinions via the popular vote! It’s incredibly heartwarming to know that we have so many members of our community who are so invested in their Library.

Unplug with us at our once a month music session. If you’re a teen-or-older musician, bring your acoustic instruments and play together around the “campfire.”  Share your own songs with the group and/or we’ll showcase songbooks and other resources from our collection. Arvada is full of fine musicians and this is a great way to mingle and learn a thing or two from the more experienced instrumentalists. Come pick a little, play a little...or just listen!

If you want your child to participate in a music program, or if you’ve thought about learning an instrument yourself, this session will get you in tune. Musicians from Golden Music will talk about and showcase various instruments. Join us and hopefully something will strike a chord!

In case you haven’t heard, we are about to buy a new batch of 30,000 library cards. Last week, we asked you to send us your favorite photos of Jeffco so we can feature one on our new cards. You’ve sent over 100 stunning photos of your favorite places in Jeffco, but there’s still time to send us your best shot!

The contest doesn’t officially close until Wednesday! Here’s the process:

1. Send us a photo of your favorite place in Jeffco before noon on Wednesday, Feb. 17. Don’t forget to include your name, email address, phone number, and a quick description of where the photo was taken.*

2. On Wednesday, a panel of judges is narrowing down the submissions to three photos and our graphics team is creating mock-ups of those three photos as potential library cards.

3. We’ll share the mock-ups on our Facebook page sometime during the evening of Feb. 17

4. We’ll invite you to vote on your favorite until midnight, Feb. 21. Please note that we extended our voting period by a couple of days to give you more time to share your opinion with us!

5. We’ll announce the winner on Monday, Feb. 22

*By submitting a photo to this contest, you give Jefferson County Public Library permission to use your photo on approximately 30,000 new library cards and to share the photo publicly on any of JCPL’s social media channels.
