Although “watch the birdie” relates to old fashioned photography, we’re talking about friends who light up our skies and trails during this time of the year.

Winter white creates a perfect backdrop to make local birds stand out, so we’re taking a cue from nature and invite you to join Evergreen Audubon and Evergreen Nature Center in celebrating the 19th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Learn more about your flighty neighbors through games, conservation crafts and (of course) bird watching. Who knows, you might catch a glimpse of a Western Scrub Jay, a Killdeer or even a Pine Sisken.

Grab your binoculars and learn about your fine feathered friends of Colorado. Start a new family tradition! You won’t believe how easy it is to become a citizen scientist in your own backyard. We’re kicking off the three-day event by turning birdfeeders and local trails into literal field labs. Register online one week in advance. Limit: 25 participants.

Kickoff event:

1 – 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 12

It’s time to buy more library cards and we’re looking for the perfect photo of Jeffco to put on them. We know that nobody understands Jeffco better that YOU, our amazing customers, so we want to invite you to help us decide the next image that will go onto the new cards!

What: A contest to get your favorite picture of someplace in Jefferson County, Colorado, onto our next batch of library cards.

When: Feb. 3 through Feb. 17

Why: We want our next batch of library cards to feature Jefferson County at its finest, not some stock image.

How: So glad you asked. Here’s the process:

       1. Send us a photo of your favorite place in Jeffco between now and Feb. 17.

              • Don’t forget to include your name, email address, and phone number

       2. A panel of judges will narrow down the submissions to three images.

       3. We’ll share the top three images on our Facebook page on Feb. 17.

       4. We'll invite the public to vote for their favorite photo until midnight, Feb. 18.

       5. We will announce the winner on Feb. 19.

       6. The winning photo will be featured on roughly 30,000 new library cards.*

And that’s it! We look forward to seeing your photos!

*By submitting your photo to this contest, you give permission to the Jefferson County Public Library to use your photo on 30,000 new library cards AND to post your photo on social media channels.

Because we know the Broncos will have oodles and oodles of time to kill between now and Sunday (wink, wink), we created a short list of book recommendations for Colorado’s favorite football team! To put them in the right frame of mind for the big game, we think the Broncos players should read:

Back by popular demand, local author Greg Hill will be discussing his new book, The Lonesome Trials of Johnny Rilesat Lakewood Library's Thursday Night Book Group.

About the book: Johnny Riles is in a rough patch. He's lonesome, he's drunk, and someone's murdered his horse. He spends his days searching-for the mysterious killer, for his brother's soul, for a sober reason to live. In this off-kilter tale spun out with dry humor, Johnny delves beneath stark Western landscapes both literal and figurative to unearth the truths behind his nightmares.

Our last visit with this author was a lot of fun and quite memorable for our whole group. Don't miss out!
