PAWS for Reading at Golden

by:
Bethany

It's gone to the dogs at the Golden Library...just not in the way you're thinking. We are continuing our popular PAWS for Reading program through the end of the year.

If you haven't heard about this fun and rewarding program, read on.

We've joined with the Pet Partners, who provide an animal therapy program that brings in four-legged friends for children to read to. Dogs are the perfect reading companions, creating a relaxed, comfortable and safe environment to share stories. Bring in the kids for a unique and meaningful experience.

Registration is required at the Children's Information Desk. Children must be able to read on their own.

Thinking of joining a book discussion group? We've got several - even some for the kids! This is a really fun way to take reading to the next level. Hear from others and share what you liked and what you didn't. How did the characters resonate with you? How did you picture them in your mind? Anything goes.

Our selections for the second half of the year are now available, including a new book group at the Standley Lake Library on Tuesday afternoons.

No need to sign up, just drop in for good books and good conversations...with great people.

Hide-n-seek Meets X Marks the Spot

Geo what? That's pretty much my reaction when I first heard we were going to be hosting this event. But, now that I’m familiar with the concept, I can’t wait to learn more.

Is geocaching a foreign concept to you too? Allow me to explain. It's outdoor treasure hunting meets hide and seek…for the modern world. You use GPS to find hidden containers filled with a logbook and other small items, make your mark and replace the container for the next treasure hunter to find.

Want to find out more? We'll have geocaching expert Phyllis McGuire at the Golden Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, to give a presentation on this fun activity and discuss earth caching…you’ll have to come to find out what that is!

East of Denver Comes West

Join local author Gregory Hill for a special evening at the Conifer Library as he speaks about his book East of Denver

Mixing pathos and humor in equal measure East of Denver is an unflinching novel of rural America, a poignant, darkly funny tale about a father and son finding their way together as their home and livelihood inexorably disappears.

Bookmobile Delivers Birthday Greetings

by:
Bethany

Last month was a busy one for the JCPL Bookmobile. Two regular bookmobile patrons, Clarence (Casey) Metcalf, from Courtyard at Lakewood, and Nellie Hougard, from Granville Assisted Living, celebrated milestone birthdays; Casey at 105 and Nellie at 100. Bookmobile supervisor Rich Allen sweetened their bookmobile visits with balloons and a cake.

This just goes to show that you're never too old to enjoy the Library!

Share Your Thoughts on Golden Remodel Design Details

by:
Bethany

A couple weeks ago, you (127 of you to be exact!) shared your thoughts on the library services you valued most, and what the dream library would provide. You provided a virtual treasure trove of input and that was just the first step on the journey to a new Golden Library.

Step two –join us from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the library to weigh in on the design details of the remodel. You will see conceptual designs, potential color schemes and possible furniture options. Let us know what you like best and what you feel best represents your community. If you can’t make it to this presentation, the designs will be on display in the library through Monday, June 9 for you to look at and share your input.

Everyone is welcome to attend – we look forward to seeing you there!

You can find more information on the remodel at jeffcolibrary.org/goldenremodel.

There's Gold in Them Thar Hills!

by:
Bethany

Goooooold! More than 150 years after Colorado's famous gold rush, people are still fascinated with finding gold in the hills outside Denver. And wouldn't you know it, there's still gold to be found. What? How? Where?

If you've had a hankering to start prospecting, but weren't sure how, Gold Prospectors of the Rockies will be at the Golden Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, to give you the low down. They will present a short history and overview of gold prospecting in Colorado, followed by a demonstration of what equipment is needed to do it yourself, how it works, starting costs and prospecting sites.

Bring your questions!
