Tax Help at JCPL

by:
Bethany

Benjamin Franklin once said, "...nothing is said to be certain, except libraries helping with your taxes." Ok, so that isn't exactly what he said, but it has a ring of truth to it and tax season is here. But fear not, dear countrymen, the Library will again be offering free tax assistance to our patrons.

Each year,  we partner with AARP to offer free counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Beginning Feb. 1, IRS-certified volunteers will be at several library locations to help with any tax-related issues people may have. Space is limited for this popular series, so patrons are encouraged to arrive early. You'll need to make a reservation if you're planning to go to Evergreen or Golden

We also have several online resources, and limited copies of select State and Federal forms in our libraries.

Good luck and happy filing!

Helping to Extend Early-Literacy Services

by:
Bethany

Early literacy. It's at the foundation of what we do as a library, so we're very excited to tell you about an innovative partnership we've joined to support early learning in Jefferson County. We'll be assisting Jefferson County's Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) and the Triad Early Childhood Council in their efforts to increase access to high-quality child care for infants and toddlers from families with low incomes.

These two groups recently received funds from the Colorado Department of Human Services to address this issue. The money will be used to provide select Jefferson County child-care facilities with materials, resources, coaching and professional development to support high-quality services. A portion of the funding will also be used to reimburse providers who have achieved a high-level of quality child care.

The program will start by providing services to 19 child-care facilities serving children from families with low-incomes. So, how do we fit in? The Library will be presenting storytimes at licensed child-care centers and offer coaching, materials and other early literacy resources to staff, parents and caregivers. We can't wait to get started!

Well, JCPL, along with several other metro area systems have partnered with Channel 7 to create more awareness of the variety of resources we have to offer. In addition, they are also featuring information on their website. Check them out today and you might just learn something new.

Author Brenda Lee Visits Arvada

by:
Bethany

As part of our monthly book discussion group, join author Brenda Lee as she discusses Out of the Cocoon: A Young Woman's Courageous Flight from the Grip of a Religious Cult.

This book is a heart-wrenching, yet inspirational tale about the author's escape from a religious cult after enduring decades of dysfunction. Take the incredible journey with her as she survives stifling oppression as a child, physical and emotional abuse as a teenager, and the ultimate tragedy: the loss of her family once she becomes an adult. See how, like a butterfly, she changes the world within her, as her external world becomes increasingly unyielding.

2014 Book Group Selections

by:
Bethany

Have you seen the new list of what books we'll be reading at our book groups for the first half of 2014? If not, you might want to check them out and drop into one of our many book groups to discuss them. We've even got some authors stopping by, including Brenda Lee and Rosemary Rawson.

I love looking over the list for what my local library is reading and what they'll be dicussing, but I also look at what the other book groups are reading to ideas for my personal reading list.

Looking for a more digital experience? We've got online book groups too - enjoy the reading and discussion in the comfort of your own home.
