Watch the Birdie!

by:
carol

Although “watch the birdie” relates to old fashioned photography, we’re talking about friends who light up our skies and trails during this time of the year.

Winter white creates a perfect backdrop to make local birds stand out, so we’re taking a cue from nature and invite you to join Evergreen Audubon and Evergreen Nature Center in celebrating the 19th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Learn more about your flighty neighbors through games, conservation crafts and (of course) bird watching. Who knows, you might catch a glimpse of a Western Scrub Jay, a Killdeer or even a Pine Sisken.

Grab your binoculars and learn about your fine feathered friends of Colorado. Start a new family tradition! You won’t believe how easy it is to become a citizen scientist in your own backyard. We’re kicking off the three-day event by turning birdfeeders and local trails into literal field labs. Register online one week in advance. Limit: 25 participants.

Kickoff event:

1 – 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 12

Your Best Shot! Library Card Contest

by:
mackenzie

It’s time to buy more library cards and we’re looking for the perfect photo of Jeffco to put on them. We know that nobody understands Jeffco better that YOU, our amazing customers, so we want to invite you to help us decide the next image that will go onto the new cards!

What: A contest to get your favorite picture of someplace in Jefferson County, Colorado, onto our next batch of library cards.

When: Feb. 3 through Feb. 17

Why: We want our next batch of library cards to feature Jefferson County at its finest, not some stock image.

How: So glad you asked. Here’s the process:

       1. Send us a photo of your favorite place in Jeffco between now and Feb. 17.

              • Don’t forget to include your name, email address, and phone number

       2. A panel of judges will narrow down the submissions to three images.

       3. We’ll share the top three images on our Facebook page on Feb. 17.

       4. We'll invite the public to vote for their favorite photo until midnight, Feb. 18.

       5. We will announce the winner on Feb. 19.

       6. The winning photo will be featured on roughly 30,000 new library cards.*

And that’s it! We look forward to seeing your photos!

*By submitting your photo to this contest, you give permission to the Jefferson County Public Library to use your photo on 30,000 new library cards AND to post your photo on social media channels.

JCPL In Your Neighborhood

by:
cindy

Ah, bookmobiles…most of us have happy memories of being a child and seeing a bookmobile roll into the parking lot of our elementary school or community shopping center. For many of us, it was almost as exciting, if not more so, than a visiting fire truck or ice cream truck. It meant new book had arrived and for avid readers, it was like being a kid in a candy shop. My kids still think the Bookmobile is awesome and I thought I’d reintroduce you to this incredible service.

As part of our Library 2 You efforts, we have the JCPL Bookmobile, which has faithfully served Jefferson County residents for over 30 years. You may not know that our Bookmobile visits over 40 sites throughout the county twice each month. Have you ever wondered if we come to your neighborhood?

Check out the new Bookmobile page. You can check out the map to see if the Bookmobile stops in your neighborhood. Or, learn about some of the services it offers, including checking out, returning, and requesting items. Oh, and did I mention that we now offer free WiFi on the Bookmobile? How awesome is that?

You can place holds and then have the Bookmobile deliver to one of the stops in your neighborhood. To do this, just go online, find and request your item, then choose “Bookmobile” as your pick up location. You can also call 303.235.5275 or email to let us know when you’d like your items available on the Bookmobile for pickup (1st & 3rd Tuesdays, etc.). But, be sure to make the stop as Bookmobile items are only held for two weeks.

The Bookmobile offers Home Services for folks permanently disabled or recovering from an injury for more than three months, making it difficult to come to the library on their own

And finally, we have some amazing programs being offered through our Library 2 You and Bookmobile services, including Dial-a-Book-Club, Dial-an-Author-Talk, and occasional onsite programs.

Let’s Go FreeSearching!

by:

Library research has evolved. Instead of stacks of books, encyclopedias, microfiche, and old newspapers, today’s research is all about the Internet.

That’s why we’re hosting a workshop to show you how to use the amazing and free research tools available through Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL)’s FreeSearch.

Bring a topic to explore and our librarians will open your eyes to all the “FreeSearch” tools available for free with a Library Card (also free). Learn how to delve deeper than simple top-tier searches and discover more through credible sources. This workshop is limited to 12 participants, each of whom will have use of a touch-screen laptop.

1 - 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23

7509 S. Alkire St., Littleton – in the McDonald’s near the Bookmobile

Registration required.

Resolve to Protect Your Identity

by:
carol

It's the time of year for working on resolutions. Here’s one we want to help you with… protecting yourself from identity theft.

If you or anyone you know has been a victim, you know how utterly frightening and time consuming it can be to get back to normal. Join Eleanor Jefferson from AARP at one of three sessions and arm yourself with good information.

Learn the 3 R’s of consumer fraud:

1 .Recognize

2. Refuse

3. Report

The ID theft presentation will give you insight on how to recognize what ID Theft looks like, how it works and help you understand common types. We’ll discuss how to refuse it and how you can protect yourself using tips to keep your information safe. Finally, if you’re a victim, you’ll learn what to do and how to report it.

This is a great overview for people who are looking to understand more about the latest ways con artists are stealing our personal information and how we can take control to protect it.

There are no “pros” to identity theft – only “cons.” Join us and resolve to fight back!
