'Thank You' Doesn't Seem Adequate

by:
Bethany

Colorado Gives Day was last Tuesday and thanks to the generosity of 180 donors the Jeffco Library Foundation was able to raise more than $17,000! As I mentioned above, thank you just doesn't seem to cut it. Without your support, JCPL wouldn't be able to offer the robust early literacy programs we do and the lives of children across the county would be poorer as a result. You have genuinely made a difference in the lives of so many kids.

If you haven't made a donation yet, there's still time before the calendar flips to 2014. Go to jeffcolibrary.org/donate

GED Test Changes for 2014

by:
Bethany

Beginning Jan. 2, a redesigned GED test will be released. This means that current GED test scores will expire at the end of 2013. If you have completed a portion of the current series of tests, you're encouraged to complete the rest before the end of the year if you want those scores to be counted.

So, what does the new test look like? It will be administered solely on computers (not online) and there will no longer be a pen and paper test. The tests will be administered at authorized testing centers. Contact your local testing center to determine any fees associated with your test.

The Library will be replacing study guides as soon as publishers are able to produce the new guides. Additionally, the Learning Express Library and Adult Learning Center will be updated as soon as possible.

Holiday "Shopping" at the Library

by:
Bethany

Let's talk about something that makes a lot of people uncomfortable, shall we? eReaders. Seems like they are everywhere these days and there are about 1,000 you can choose from. You might be thinking about putting it on your list for Santa or thinking of getting one for someone...but what if you (or they) don't like it? That could be a waste of money! Wouldn't it be great if you could test one out before you made the commitment? Well, you can at the library!

We have a limited number of JCPL 2 Go devices that you can check out from any of our locations. What exactly is this thing you speak of, you may be wondering. JCPL 2 Go devices are wireless D2 tablets that weigh less than a paperback and contain a virtual library of eBooks and other digital information. Learn more about them now, then get one in your hands.

Need stocking stuffer ideas for folks? We've got that covered too. A library card is a perfect idea! With one, you get a nearly endless supply of books, movies, music, magazines, events, museum admissions, research resources, eBooks, etc., etc., etc. Pick up an application today and make someone's holiday a little bit brighter.

Read the Signs

Fact: Roughly 1 in 1,000 children in the U.S. are born with severe to profound hearing loss, and these children risk experiencing delays in language, speech development and reading skills.

Did you know that the library can provide amazing learning experiences for deaf and hard of hearing children and their parents with our ASL storytimes? Kathryn, a patron of the Belmar Library, has two children who were born deaf. She says "It’s important to me that they learn to love reading as much as I do. ASL storytimes give them the opportunity to interact with others, acquire important pre-reading skills, develop their cognitive abilities, and communicate more fully with the world around them." The ASL storytimes allow her children to be 100 percent part of the library activity and share their beautiful language with everyone else. She adds, "I love how the library shows them that they are important - and that reading is important for them, too.”
