Check Out an eReader with JCPL 2 Go

by:
Bethany

Wanted to get your hands on an eReader, but didn't want to commit to buying one? Now you can! JCPL is now offering a limited number of JCPL 2 Go devices for checkout at all 10 library locations. These Internet-enabled computer tablets offer wireless access to an exciting menu of digital information, including eBooks, magazines, games, videos, Internet search capabilities and more.

JCPL 2 Go devices are wireless D2 tablets that weigh less than a paperback but can contain a virtual library of eBooks and other digital information. The tablets come preloaded with selected eBook titles, a game, and Library eBook applications, so patrons can download other digital titles from the Library. They are available in three formats − kids, teens and adults − and may be checked out for three weeks at a time. They come with a carrying case, charger and instructions, and Library staff members are available to provide an overview of the device to interested patrons.

The tablets will be included with the Library’s Lucky Day offerings and displayed near library entrances. As with other Lucky Day items, they may not be reserved in advance or set aside for patron pick-up. While patrons can search the Library’s online catalog to determine availability of JCPL 2 Go devices, they are only available for checkout on a first-come, first-served basis.

A big thank you to the Jeffco Library Foundation, whose generous donation allowed us bring these tablets to you!

Painting a Story with Words

by:
Bethany

Can writing really be compared to painting? You'd be surprised.

Novelist Elizabeth Wrenn, author of Around the Next Corner, will illustrate how writers make a myriad of choices on every page, and why. From the detail work of a stippling brush (word choice), to the broader strokes of large brushes (plot, character, dialogue, setting), to the frame surrounding it all (beginning, middle, end), writers must use all the tools in their kit.

This hands-on workshop, presented by 40 West Arts and the Lakewood Library, will share practical tips and techniques for more effective writing.

1 p.m. Sunday, June 9

HHhH by Laurent Binet

A New York Times notable book for 2012, HHhH is a fast paced, thrilling and historically accurate novelization of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich.  Known as "The Butcher of Prague," Heydrich was feared for his cruelty (he helped mastermind the final solution) which, combined with his Aryan features made him a rising star in Hitler's cabinet.  Many historians believe he would have eventually succeeded Hitler as Führer.  HHhH also tells the story of the Czech and Slovak fighters who trained for and successfully completed the mission in May 1942.  These two stories take turns amongst the author's personal musings about the art of writing historical fiction.  The short but meaty chapters keep the reader entertained and eager for each successive page.
