Homebound Services Extended to Jeffco's Westminster Residents
Feb. 20, 2014
Great news for Westminster residents who live in the Jeffco part of the city - we are partnering with the Westminster Public Library to extend homebound services to that part of the county. JCPL’s Homebound Service is for people who are unable to come to a library due to a permanent condition or temporary condition lasting longer than three months. Through this service, we arrange for the delivery of library materials via home delivery or by mail.
Westminster is interesting when it comes to library services:
Adams County residents living in Westminster are also served by Rangeview Library District. Adams County residents would not qualify for JCPL’s homebound services.
Jefferson County residents living in Westminster may apply for JCPL’s Homebound Services online or call 303-275-6161. Homebound Library Service applications are also available at both Westminster Public Library locations.
Oh to be a kid again! How fun would it be to create art based on some of your favorite books? Heck, that even sounds like a good time as an adult.
We've partnered with the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art to present an art-making workshop at the Arvada Library each month based on popular kids books! A visiting artist will help your kids express themselves through a variety of art media, with the emphasis on creativity and fun!
This free program is designed for 6-12-year-olds and takes place from 4-5 p.m., the fourth Friday of each month through July, at the Arvada Library. Registration is not required; participation is limited to the first 30 participants.
We certainly didn't have anything this cool around when I was a kid - I'm tempted to swing by just to see the masterpieces that are created!
Let's face it, taxes can be confusing all around, right? One of the biggest headaches can be how business-related items fit in. Luckily, we have a program that can help you out if you are looking for some guidance. You'll learn about common IRS business tax deductions, including:
Parenting. Sometimes it can seem like an overwhelming responsibility. There's so much you need to be thinking of that you might not know where to begin. You might want to hear more than one perspective on a topic before deciding what will be best for your family. To provide some assistance with the monumental task of being the best parent you can be, we've started a brand new book group just for parents at the Arvada Library.
On the second Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m., parents are invited to attend this book group and discuss the selected topic. From Brain Development to Toxicity, we'll be covering a number of important issues. While there's not a specific title to read each month, we do offer suggestions, but you're not limited to those.
Feel free to bring along your little ones - we'll have storytime, books and coloring sheets for them while you're with the group.
Benjamin Franklin once said, "...nothing is said to be certain, except libraries helping with your taxes." Ok, so that isn't exactly what he said, but it has a ring of truth to it and tax season is here. But fear not, dear countrymen, the Library will again be offering free tax assistance to our patrons.
Each year, we partner with AARP to offer free counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Beginning Feb. 1, IRS-certified volunteers will be at several library locations to help with any tax-related issues people may have. Space is limited for this popular series, so patrons are encouraged to arrive early. You'll need to make a reservation if you're planning to go to Evergreen or Golden.
We also have several online resources, and limited copies of select State and Federal forms in our libraries.

This book is a heart-wrenching, yet inspirational tale about the author's escape from a religious cult after enduring decades of dysfunction. Take the incredible journey with her as she survives stifling oppression as a child, physical and emotional abuse as a teenager, and the ultimate tragedy: the loss of her family once she becomes an adult. See how, like a butterfly, she changes the world within her, as her external world becomes increasingly unyielding.
Last week, on the first night of the really cold temperatures, the Arvada library had our holiday open house. Coincidentally this was also the night of the tree lighting ceremony in the square and Old Towne Arvada's Lagniappe Celebration.(Put this event on your calendar for next year if you have never been!) There were free carriage rides, costumed carolers, and inside the Arvada Library was Santa. Excited children munched on gingerbread cookies and played with mounds of gingerbread scented play dough. It smelled divine! Many parents asked for my recipe - so even if you missed the open house, you can still get in on the gingerbread play dough fun! But remember to warn the kids...this play dough smells amazing, but tastes terrible.
Play dough even promotes early literacy in young children! Playing with play dough strengthens the small muscles in the hand. These are the same muscles that will enable a child to hold a pencil one day. It also encourages them to use their imagination. It may be a brown lump of dough, but they see a cookie, a snake, a bracelet and more!
Gingerbread Play Dough
1 cup all purpose flour 1/2 cup salt 2 tsp. cream of tartar 1 tbsp. ground cinnamon 2 tsp. ground ginger 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ground cloves 2 tbsp. canola oil 1 cup water In a medium saucepan whisk together dry ingredients. Next mix in the water and oil. Stir until a thick batter is formed. Cook the mixture over med-low heat until a thick dough forms. Turn out onto parchment paper and knead until smooth. Makes about 2 cups of dough.
