Looking for a fun, yet informative activity this weekend? Come over to the Sustain Arvada Festival to learn how you can conserve resources and live sustainably. Did we mention there will be food and music? And aplacas?! We'll be there from 10-4 Saturday, May 11.
These special storytimes are being held in conjunction with One Book 4 Colorado, a statewide initiative to support early literacy by distributing a new book to every four-year-old child in Colorado. Shannon’s book, Duck on a Bike, was selected for distribution in 2013 through a state-wide voting process earlier in the year!
Registration is required for the Columbine Library storytime event and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Register online at jeffcolibrary.org/events, by phone at 303-235-5275, or in-person at the Columbine Library. No registration is required for the Arvada Library event.
Join us at Standley Lake and Arvada Libraries to welcome the Arvada Police Department as they give a brief introduction to their SHARP course.
The Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention (SHARP) course has been specifically designed to meet the needs of women, teaching principles and strategies for effectively reducing the likelihood of assault through actual techniques for countering an attack. Utilizing efficient and effective methods of subject control that do not rely on size and strength, PPCT Management Systems, Inc. has developed a training system that can be used by just about everyone who is interested in personal safety.
In other words, just because you are small and female, doesn't mean you can't defend yourself!
Participants will be able to learn more about signing up for the three session course, which is free to Arvada residents at the following events:

JCPL's Executive Director, Pam Nissler, was the featured guest on the latest episode of Arvada Insights, hosted by Arvada Mayor Marc Williams. Ever want to know more about the history of the town or neighborhood you live in? Your local Jefferson County Library is a great place to start.
The Jefferson County Historic Collection at Standley Lake is home to countless historical maps from the last 100 years from around the county as well as priceless historical documents and one-off publications, such as a 1983 volume titled Grandview Streetscape Project and Notorious Jefferson County: Frontier Murder & Mayhem. Other interesting documents to look at are the old Sanborn fire insurance maps of the area. The Golden library, for example, has a map of the area from 1886 that details not only what structures were in place at the time, but also their uses and ownership.
And here at the Arvada Library, we have a sizeable collection of materials about our town, neighborhoods and Jefferson County as a whole. Wonder what Arva-Pride is and why it’s plastered on the side of that old building downtown? Want to follow the trail of Lewis Ralston that led him to pan for gold in what is now Ralston Creek? We’ve got you covered.
On July 9th and July 18th, Arvada kids had a snortin' good time with Mudslinger and Digger at the Top Hogs show.
Called "the einsteins of porcine," Mudslinger and Digger wowed the crowd with a variety of tricks. The pigs played sports, made music, rode a skateboard and even put their toys away when they were finished playing with them!
Did you see Mudslinger and Digger at the Top Hogs show this summer? Tell us all about it!
