We hope you were able to attend our special program featuring renowned author and physical activity specialist, Rae Pica, on October 14. Whether or not you were there, now it's time to put her suggestions into play. Literally!

Rae Pica shared with us how parents, families, teachers, caregivers and childcare providers can help our kids be ready to read by understanding the relationship between physical activity and the brain, the value of play, and how to use movement, play and active learning to nurture a child’s ability to learn to read and think.

To keep things moving, we’re hosting Movin' & Groovin' Fests in the coming weeks. Learn how to make fun movement/play objects from everyday materials. It's a wonderful way to help you baby, toddler and preschool get ready to read.

Bring the kids and join the fun at one of our Movin' & Groovin' Fests. You'll realize why Rae Pica believes, that children "...don't exist only from the neck up. They are thinking, feeling, moving human beings who learn through all their senses."

Unless otherwise noted, Fests are held from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Saturday, October 17: Golden and Lakewood

Saturday, October 24: Arvada and Evergreen

Saturday, November 7: Edgewater (2-4 p.m.), Standley Lake, Columbine

Saturday, November 14: Belmar, Conifer, Wheat Ridge

Residents in South Jefferson County are taking advantage of the JCPL Bookmobile! Each Saturday in the Safeway parking lot at Ken Caryl Ave. and Shaffer Pkwy from 12-4 p.m. the bookmobile makes its weekly visit - and people are beginning to notice.

You can use the Bookmobile for some of our most popular services: checking out and returning materials; placing and picking up holds; and accessing information about other library services. The collection holds more than 2,000 items for people of all ages in a variety of formats—books, DVDs, and audiobooks.

You can also use the Bookmobile as a pickup location for holds and requested items. That means that every Saturday we come to you to deliver your new items and accept your returns.  Just be sure to choose "Bookmobile" in the drop down menu from the catalog using your existing JCPL library card. Don’t have a library card? It's easy to get one on the Bookmobile.

We are proud to share that we also offer quality programming through the Bookmobile, including a book club and monthly programming in the McDonald’s Play Place. The Bookmobile welcomes members to its new monthly Saturday book club that meets from 1– 2 p.m. on Saturdays in Starbucks at 12512 W Ken Caryl Ave.  Join the discussion and decide next month’s book selection.  Call 303.275.6173 for more information.

Do you have a new or reluctant reader in your family? If so, we have just the program for you! Our very popular PAWS for Reading program -- which started at the Golden Library last year -- is now available at libraries throughout Jefferson County!

We're partnering with the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program to give young readers the encouragement they need to improve their reading skills. In this program, we invite kids to read to trained therapy dogs. Research has shown that these programs are particularly helpful for reluctant readers. They tend to be much more comfortable reading to dogs because there’s no stress and no judgment. And parents have reported that children participating in the program turn to reading more at home, show a greater willingness to read aloud at school, and are more disposed to venturing into increasingly difficult reading materials.

Registration is required for these programs; to register, call 303-235-5275 or ask staff for details.

Has this ever happened to you? You're rolling along, a happy family, and suddenly, your adorable, loveable, winsome children turn into sulking, uncommunicative strangers. Your daughter wants a nose ring. Your son wants a tattoo -- a zulu tatoo, that will stretch across the bridge of his nose and cover his cheeks. The last thing they want to do is spend time with you, and you can barely tear them away from texting their friends long enough to eat dinner.

Welcome to the teenage years.

We all live through it, and most kids come out on the other side as thoughtful, responsible adults, but the interim years can be trying. So, what's a parent to do?

We have just the program for you: Active Parenting of Teens.

This six-week program, taught by trained professionals from the Mountain Resource Center of Conifer, will cover respectful discipline, clear and honest communication, strategies to prevent risky behavior and how to be an encouraging parent.

Spaces are limited, and there is a $15 fee to cover the cost of materials.

Ask your local librarian how to register, or call 303-235-5275.

Tell me if this sounds familiar: you have a recipe you’ve been dying to try. You take the time getting all your ingredients together and follow the instructions to a T. Come to find out, it’s taking much longer to bake than it should, or it’s too dry, or it’s not cooking evenly, or it doesn’t taste quite right.

What went wrong?

Turns out, because we live at such a high elevation, sometimes we need to tweak our recipes a bit. A lot of people, myself included, often ignore or forget to do to this. Others just don’t know.

If you’re new to Colorado baking, or if you've always wondered how to make those recipes come out just right, we’ve got a can’t-miss event. High-altitude food specialist Randi Levin will share tips on how to adjust recipes for success and flavor at higher elevations. She’ll also provide information on healthy cooking and baking, including special dietary concerns.

Bring your questions!
