What's Going on in the World Today?

by:
Bethany

Let's be honest for a minute. As a society, Americans aren't as up to speed on what is happening in the rest of the world, and what our role is, as some other countries. In fact, the issues out there today can seem slightly overwhelming to tackle.

If you're looking for a place to start, why not come to one of our upcoming Great Decisions nights at the Columbine or Evergreen Libraries. This popular foreign policy discussion group is perfect for those who are interested in learning more about current events.

Each program is presented in a balanced and non-partisan way, and includes background information, current data and policy options for each issue. Topics include:

  • Defense Technology
  • Israel and the U.S.
  • Turkey’s Challenges
  • Islamic Awakening
  • Energy Independence
  • Food and Climate
  • China’s Foreign Policy
  • U.S. Trade Policy

Sessions at the Columbine Library begin with a planning meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27 and continue on select Mondays through May 19. The Evergreen Library will host the program beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19. It will continue through Monday, May 5.

Exact date information

Meetings are open to anyone who would like to attend.

Tax Help at JCPL

by:
Bethany

Benjamin Franklin once said, "...nothing is said to be certain, except libraries helping with your taxes." Ok, so that isn't exactly what he said, but it has a ring of truth to it and tax season is here. But fear not, dear countrymen, the Library will again be offering free tax assistance to our patrons.

Each year,  we partner with AARP to offer free counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Beginning Feb. 1, IRS-certified volunteers will be at several library locations to help with any tax-related issues people may have. Space is limited for this popular series, so patrons are encouraged to arrive early. You'll need to make a reservation if you're planning to go to Evergreen or Golden

We also have several online resources, and limited copies of select State and Federal forms in our libraries.

Good luck and happy filing!

Evergreen Library presents a series of Westerns for our Sunday Matinees. Coming up...

The Searchers - Sept. 8, 2 p.m.
A classic John Wayne movie and arguably the actor’s best performance.  He plays Ethan Edwards, a Confederate soldier. Returning home to Texas after the Civil War, Edwards finds that Comanches have captured his nieces and killed their parents. He embarks on a quest for revenge. Directed by John Ford, the movie is both a big screen adventure and an examination of bigotry and hatred.

Silverado - Sept. 22, 2 p.m.
Stars a young Kevin Costner as well as Kevin Kline, Linda Hunt, Jeff Goldblum, John Cleese, Danny Glover and others. In this modern classic, four unwitting heroes cross paths on their journey to the sleepy town of Silverado. It's up to the sharp-shooting foursome to save the day, but first they have to break each other out of jail and learn who their real friends are. A good plot, humor, action and romance make this movie a thoroughly enjoyable film while looking back to the glory days of westerns.

Refreshments provided.

Now Showing!

A fun family movie in theaters now:  Despicable Me 2 - Gru (Steve Carell) is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal.  What a fun sequel to the first Despicable Me (2010) where Gru who claimed to be a criminal mastermind used a trio of orphan girls as pawns in a grand scheme.  Instead of villainous glory he finds their love is profoundly changing him for the better.  With the jokes flying (for adults, too), "Minions" running amuck and sharp graphics, kids find both of these movies so much fun!

There was a showing of Despicable Me at the Evergreen Library in July to a very enthusiastic crowd of young patrons.

Every third Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Evergreen Children’s staff presents a family movie in their series, Saturday at the Movies.  We serve popcorn and offer drinks while families watch movies on the big screen in the meeting room.
Here’s the lineup for the rest of the year:

August 17 – Cars, rated G

September 21 – Toy Story 3, rated G

October 19 – Hotel Transylvania, rated PG

November 16 – The Croods, rated PG

December 21 – Rise of the Guardians, rated PG

Journey to Evergreen Library and join them next month. Bring a pillow, a sense of humor and prepare to enjoy a couple of hours of sheer pleasure.  It is FREE of course, and you can obtain tickets in person or online one week in advance.
