PAWS for Reading Program Expands

by:
Rebecca

Do you have a new or reluctant reader in your family? If so, we have just the program for you! Our very popular PAWS for Reading program -- which started at the Golden Library last year -- is now available at libraries throughout Jefferson County!

We're partnering with the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program to give young readers the encouragement they need to improve their reading skills. In this program, we invite kids to read to trained therapy dogs. Research has shown that these programs are particularly helpful for reluctant readers. They tend to be much more comfortable reading to dogs because there’s no stress and no judgment. And parents have reported that children participating in the program turn to reading more at home, show a greater willingness to read aloud at school, and are more disposed to venturing into increasingly difficult reading materials.

Registration is required for these programs; to register, call 303-235-5275 or ask staff for details.

Meet Colorado Author Andrea Jones

by:
Rebecca

On Feb. 3, Andrea M. Jones will visit the Standley Lake Library to discuss her book Between Urban and Wild: Reflections from Colorado.

Andrea was born and raised in Colorado and now lives at an elevation of 8900 feet. This setting has been the inspiration for a collection of essays on natural history and land use issues titled Between Urban and Wild: Reflections from Colorado. In these essays, she advances the tradition of nature writing by acknowledging the effects of sprawl on her beloved landscape.

Her publisher's review states: "Probing the contradictions of a lifestyle that burdens the health of the land that she loves, Jones' writing is permeated by her gentle, earnest conviction that living at the urban-wild interface requires us to set aside self-interest, consider compromise, and adjust our expectations and habits to accommodate our surroundings rather than force them to accommodate us."

Between Urban and Wild was published in 2013. It was shortlisted in the Adult Nonfiction category of the Reading the West Award, sponsored by the Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association. Jones' work has also appeared in Orion Magazine; the Christian Science Monitor; High Country News; Wildbranch: An Anthology of Nature, Environmental, and Place-Based Writing (University of Utah Press, 2011); and Ankle High and Knee Deep: Women Reflect on Western Rural Life (TwoDot, June 2014).

Please join us for this thoughtful and engaging perspective on life in the Colorado wild.

It's Tax Time. Why Are These People Smiling?

by:
Rebecca

Meet AARP Tax Advisor John Kure, AARP Tax Coordinator Gene McCracken, former Lakewood Librarian Sharon Partridge and Lakewood Library Patron Rick Caulfield. These folks had a very happy experience last year!

Rick came to the library for AARP Tax Help, and John and Gene helped him find $2,000 in missed deductions! In the course of their review of his tax return, they pointed out that Rick had missed a $500 pension deduction. They not only helped him get a larger return in 2014; they also helped him file amended tax returns for previous years, resulting in overall savings of $2,000!

Don't make the same mistake! Let AARP's certified tax advisors help you with your tax returns this year.

Beginning in February, the Library and AARP will provide free tax counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. IRS-certified volunteers will be on hand at our Arvada, Belmar, Columbine, Evergreen, Lakewood and Standley Lake Libraries to help you with tax-related questions through April 15. Space is limited for each session and participants are encouraged to arrive early. Please note: appointments are required at the Evergreen Library.
