Jeffco Public Library’s Summer Reading Club Begins June 1 with Celebrations

Have Fun, Learn New Things, Win Prizes!

(Lakewood, Colo. – May 27, 2014) Jefferson County Public Library’s (JCPL) Summer Reading Club officially gets underway Sunday, June 1. Kids, teens and adults can sign up online at jeffcolibrary.org/summerreading or at any JCPL location.

This annual program will kick off with special celebrations at most JCPL locations from 12-5 p.m. Sunday, June 1. The Evergreen Library will host its event from 3-5 p.m. at the Hiwan Homestead Museum (4208 S. Timbervale Dr.) and the Edgewater Library will host its celebration from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, June 2.

Summer Reading Club runs from June 1-July 31, and fosters literacy and learning over the summer months while children are not in school. According to a report by the U.S. Department of Education, reading loss is cumulative and children don’t “catch up” in the fall because their peers are moving ahead with their skills. With fun, interactive programs and activities supplementing the reading portion of the program, parents are able to take an active role in their child’s development.

Children are invited to participate in “Fizz Boom Read!” In this year’s program, they will have the chance to explore space, delight in magic, make a wish, create chemical reactions and have a blast at pol-KABOOM. Reservations are required for these programs. The full schedule of events can be found at jeffcolibrary.org/summerreading.

Teens can “Spark a Reaction” this year, including sampling insect cuisine, creating optical illusions, discovering the wonders of the human skeleton, exploring the gross side of science and taking an inside look at 3D printing. A full schedule can be found at jeffcolibrary.org/summerreading.

Adults are invited to “Light Up Your Brain With Lifelong Learning” by completing activities based on the healthy brain initiative. See jeffcolibrary.org/summerreading for additional information.

As part of the program, the Library will offer a game card format for participants to record their progress. The game card offers a fun and easy way to log activities, while encouraging participants to explore the Library’s collection, services and resources. As participants complete game card activities, they become eligible to win prizes.

• Kids and teens that complete the first level of activities will receive a free book (compliments of the Jefferson County Library Foundation) and be entered to win a Kindle Fire (or a LeapPad tablet for those ages 0-5).
• Kids and teens who complete additional pieces of the game card can earn additional rewards and coupons, including free admission to Lakeside Amusement Park.
• Teens that complete their game cards will also have the chance to win a spot at a special after hours Games Night on Aug. 15.
• Adults who complete their game card receive a coupon for free book from any of the Library Foundation used book sales, including used book sale areas in the libraries. They will also be entered to win a Kindle Fire.

Summer Reading Club is sponsored by the Jefferson County Library Foundation and the Friends of Jefferson County Public Library. The Kindle Fires and LeapPad tablet are generously supplied by the Foundation and Friends. Other program partners include Bandimere Speedway, Beau Jo’s Pizza, the Colorado Rapids, Heritage Square, Lakeside Amusement Park, McDonald’s, Noodles & Co., the Rheinlander Bakery, and Westerra Credit Union.
