Jefferson County Public Library and Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art Partner to Provide Book-Themed Art Workshops for Children

(Lakewood, Colo. - January 21, 2013) Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) announced today that it is partnering with Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) to provide a series of literacy-based, hands-on art workshops for children in Arvada. Beginning Thursday, Jan. 24 and continuing through 2013, the Arvada Library will host monthly Art Stop on the Go workshops for children ages 6-12, led by BMoCA Museum Educator Heather Cherry.

"We’re thrilled to be able to offer this innovative program," said Larry Domingues, Arvada library manager. "Each session will allow our younger patrons to express themselves through a variety of media and link their creative expression to a favorite book. It allows us to reinforce the importance of books and reading in a very personal and creative way."

"Art Stop on the Go is BMoCA’s premiere after school art education program for at-risk youth ages 6-12," said Shannon Crothers, director of education, BMoCA. "Established in 2008, the program has served children through the I Have a Dream Center and the Family Learning Center in Boulder.

"Our goal has been to expand this important program to our neighboring communities," Crothers continued. "Thanks to a generous grant from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), we’re now able to expand our outreach and offer these workshops at the Arvada Library, as well as libraries in Broomfield and Adams County."

Museum Educator Heather Cherry has been teaching youth programs with BMoCA for more than two years. In addition to Art Stop on the Go, she teaches Contemporary Classroom, Art Stop, and Young Artists at Work. She received her Master of Arts in Art Education from Tufts University. Also a practicing artist, her newest installation Chasing Wonder is on view at the Firehouse Art Center in Longmont through Feb. 3, 2013.

Art Stop on the Go sessions at the Arvada Library will be held monthly through the end of the year. Registration is not required; however, sessions are limited to the first 20 participants. For additional information, including dates and times, contact the Library at 303-235-5275.
