Jeffco Holding Library District Formation Hearing
(LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Feb. 4, 2008) Jefferson County residents will soon have the opportunity to offer their input in ongoing discussions about forming a library district in Jefferson County. The Board of County Commissioners (BCC) is holding a public hearing Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 5:30 p.m. in Hearing Room One of the Jefferson County Administration and Courts Facility, located at 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden.

After studying operations of other Colorado libraries for more than a year, the Jefferson County Public Library Board of Trustees met with the BCC in late November 2006 to ask for approval to further research the advantages and potential disadvantages of forming a library district. Acting upon the request from the Library Board, on Dec. 19, 2006, the BCC authorized the formation of a steering committee comprised of key staff from the Library and county to research the advantages and potential disadvantages of district formation.

Library districts are not new. In fact, 51 of the 114 public libraries in Colorado are library districts, including most of the largest library systems, such as Adams County, Arapahoe County, Douglas County, Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Weld County and Fort Collins/Larimer County.

The first step in the formation process is the public hearing, which is required by Colorado State Statute. The decision to operate Jefferson County Public Library as a district will be made to the BCC.

Residents can also submit their comments as part of the official record by e-mailing Library Board Chair Keith Grebe at keith_grebe@hotmail.com or the Board of County Commissioners at commish@jeffco.us. Comments may also be submitted in writing to 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO 80419.
